APPENDIX C: JOB DESCRIPTIONS OF INSTRUCTIONAL ASSOCIATE POSITIONS

These job descriptions may be amended from time to time by the Employer after consultation with, and the approval of, the incumbent and the Union (such approval shall not be unreasonably withheld). Job descriptions for new positions shall be included in the Collective Agreement when they have been approved by the Employer and prior to candidate interviews.

C.1 Arts Positions

C.1.1 Instructional Associate in Languages

  1. Preparation of materials for laboratory components of language courses,
  2. Supervision of Departmentally scheduled laboratory periods and assistance to instructors for courses offered by the Department when required,
  3. Assistance to members of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages in their research and teaching functions as needed within the language laboratory, 
  4. Preparation of other taped materials normally used for teaching by members of the Language Department in or out of the laboratory, 
  5. Ordering and maintenance of equipment, supplies and materials, including requesting service calls by qualified technical personnel when required,
  6. Maintenance of financial and other records of the laboratory (i.e. attendance, copying, etc.),
  7. Maintenance of the Language Laboratory Tape and Book Collections, and
  8. Such other appropriate duties as may be agreed to by the Department in consultation with the Instructional Associate.

C.2 Science Positions

The instructional associates are academically responsible to the Department, through its Chair, and administratively responsible to the Dean.

C.2.1 Instructional Associate in Botany

  1. Preparation of materials and direction of Biology I and II, Introduction to Botany and Social Biology laboratories,
  2. Preparation of laboratory outlines for Biology I and II and Introduction to Botany laboratories,
  3. Setting and marking laboratory tests and assistance in the marking of Biology I and II and Introduction to Botany examinations. Occasional assistance in setting up other labs or lab tests in other Botany courses, 
  4. Ordering and maintenance of equipment and supplies,
  5. Maintenance of financial records of the Department,
  6. Responsibility for and use of audio-visual equipment,
  7. Generation and maintenance of plant and animal collections in the Department,
  8. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus, and
  9. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.2.2 Instructional Associate in Chemistry

  1. Preparation of materials for Chemistry laboratories,
  2. Supervision of first-year laboratories, tutorials, and demonstrations, including responsibility for manuals,
  3. Assistance in senior laboratories as required,
  4. Operation of chemical store room, including ordering of supplies and equipment,
  5. Maintenance of financial records of the Department,
  6. Assistance to faculty members in their research programs.
  7. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus, and
  8. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.2.3 Instructor in Chemistry/Mathematics/Physics

  1. Chemistry 090 course
  1. Instruction of the course,
  2. Instruction of the labs, and
  3. Preparation of assignments, labs, tests and evaluation of student progress. 
  1. Mathematics 090 course
  1. Instruction of the course,
  2. Instruction of the labs,
  3. Preparation of tests and assignments and evaluation of student progress, and
  4. Serve as contact person for IUN instructors teaching Basic Math or Core Math.
  1. Physics 090 course
  1. Instruction of the course,
  2. Instruction of the labs, and 
  3. Preparation of labs, tests and evaluation of student progress.
  1. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department , and
  2.  The conditions of Article 9.4.1(d) do not apply to the teaching of any course below the 100 level for this position.

C. 2.4 Instructional Associate in Geography

  1. Assistance to and/or instruction of Geography course laboratories as determined by the Department,
  2. Assistance to and/or instruction of Geography courses as determined by the Department,
  3. Preparation of cartographic materials (i.e. maps, diagrams, etc.) for faculty research and classroom use,
  4. Technical assistance to faculty members in their research programs, 
  5. Procurement, organization and maintenance of 
  1. the Topographic Maps and Map Library, and 
  2. the Air Photos and Air Photo Library, 
  1. Ordering, administering and maintenance of computer hardware and software,
  2. Ordering, storage and maintenance of departmental equipment, including audio-visuals, and supplies,
  3. Maintenance of departmental accounts and financial records,
  4. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus, and
  5. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.2.5 Instructional Associate in Geology

  1. Supervision of first year Geology laboratories, including preparation of laboratories, supervision of laboratory assistants, preparation of marking sheets and answer keys, grading of lab assignments, preparation and grading of laboratory exams, and maintenance of class records,
  2. Provide undergraduate instruction in a variety of 2nd to 4th year Geology laboratories,
  3. Provide undergraduate instruction in up to two Geology courses (lectures and laboratories), and assist in the Field Geology course,
  4. Act as curator of the Departmental teaching collections of minerals, rocks, ore specimens and paleontology specimens, including teaching kits for loan to teachers in SW Manitoba and Education students,
  5. Prepare specimens for teaching and research,
  6. Prepare and maintain geology displays and promotional material,
  7. Arrange for repair and maintenance of Departmental equipment as required,
  8. Purchase equipment and supplies for the Department and maintain the Department's financial records,
  9. Provide technical assistance to faculty for their research,
  10. Maintain and update the Geology web page,
  11. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) on campus, and
  12. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.2.6 Instructional Associate in Mathematics and Computer Science

  1. Hire and supervise markers and lab assistants for the Department,
  2. Hire and supervise lab advisors for the computer centre and math study hall,
  3. Assist in the labs for first year courses,
  4. Assist with senior labs as required,
  5. Administer and supervise tests,
  6. Prepare marking sheets, marker notes and answer keys for first year courses when necessary and upon agreement with individual faculty members,
  7. Arrange for tests to be marked and maintain mark records,
  8. Answer student inquiries,
  9. Post and keep regular office hours for each academic term as approved by the Department,
  10. Provide liaison with Information Technology Services,
  11. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus,
  12. Provide such technical support for research and course development as required,
  13. Arrange for repair and maintenance of Department equipment, exclusive of individual faculty members' equipment,
  14. Perform public relations duties for the Department both within the university and within the community and surrounding area, and
  15. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.2.7 Instructional Associate in Physics and Astronomy

The following list of duties and functions are in order of priority and is intended as a guide. It is realized that some flexibility must be maintained in order to facilitate the operation of the Department and the achievement of the goals of the Department and its members.

  1. Preparation of all Physics laboratory classes,
  2. Assistance in Physics laboratory classes as determined by the Department, including supervision, limited instruction, grading of reports and examinations, preparing examinations and manuals, in some classes,
  3. Maintenance of laboratory and teaching apparatus and equipment, 
  4. Maintenance of apparatus and equipment for research within the Department,
  5. Procurement of apparatus, equipment and supplies,
  6. Maintenance of financial records of the Department, including assistance in the preparation of the capital budget,
  7. Operation and maintenance of the Physics and Astronomy workshop,
  8. Design and fabrication of apparatus for teaching and research,
  9. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus,
  10. Assistance within the Faculty as agreed with the Department, and
  11. Such other appropriate duties as assigned by the Department.

C.2.8 Instructional Associate in Zoology

  1. The instructional associate is responsible for:the maintenance and operation of Zoology laboratories. Laboratory instruction will be done in cooperation with the course instructor,
  2. Ordering and receiving Departmental supplies. This includes maintaining inventories and assisting Chairperson with Departmental budgets and other financial records,
  3. Teach a Zoology course as necessary,
  4. Assistance to faculty members in their research programs. Some opportunity for independent research may occur,
  5. Serve as the Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus,
  6. Operation and maintenance of the vivarium under the supervision of Departmental Chairperson and in conjunction with the Chairperson of the Animal Care Committee, and
  7. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Department.

C.3 Health Studies

C.3.1 Instructional Associate in Health Studies

This position reports to the Dean of Health Studies and is responsible for the following activities:

  1. Laboratory preparation, facilitation and instruction of nursing courses, and practica, in collaboration with course professor(s),
  2. Maintenance of laboratory equipment and inventories,
  3. Serve as Department's representative for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) on campus,
  4. Assistance to faculty members in their research programs as mutually negotiated, and
  5. Participation in curriculum development, and
  6. other related activities as may be assigned by the Department.

C.4 Projects

C.4.1 Instructional Associate (Web Designer) in Campus Manitoba (new)

C. 5 Instructional Associate, First Nations and Aboriginal Counselling (FNAC)

This position reports to the Dean and/or FNAC Director. The Instructional Associate will teach to a maximum of six (6) credit hours in an appropriate area, and will manage the practica in the following activities:

  1. Supervise Practicum I students,
  2. Receive and coordinate faculty and student requests for practicum placements,
  3. Negotiate and arrange practicum experiences where students can obtain learning opportunities appropriate to the curriculum objectives,
  4. Facilitate the signing and updating of practicum agreements between Brandon University and practicum sites,
  5. Maintain records of the practicum agreements,
  6. Act as a liaison between the First Nations and Aboriginal Counseling Program and practicum sites; mediate conflict situations between students and on-site preceptors,
  7. Coordinate the signing of Pledge of Confidentiality forms for all students,
  8. Investigate potential practicum opportunities,
  9. Coordinate the distribution and revision of the practicum manual for practicum sites,
  10. Facilitate the development and periodic review and revision of standard student evaluation tools for use by faculty and on-site preceptors,
  11. Facilitate orientation session for preceptors,
  12. Coordinate annual recognition activities for preceptors and practicum providers,
  13. Receive from on-site preceptors, at the intervals specified, evaluations of students in practicum placements,
  14. Academic advising of students, and
  15. Perform such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Dean and/or FNAC Director.
