BUFA STRIKE VOTE OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE

Members of the bargaining unit represented by the Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) have voted overwhelmingly to endorse strike action against their employer, the Board of Governors of Brandon University (BOG). Results of the strike vote, which was taken over the last eleven days, were released by BUFA late this afternoon.

Of the votes cast, 84% were in favour of taking strike action. The results mirror those of the strike votes taken in 1998, 2002 and 2005.

In commenting on this development, BUFA President Bruce Forrest said, "We are very pleased and grateful for this expression of support from our members."

"The clear message is that BUFA members are very concerned about the major issues, which include salaries and benefits, pensions, workload and language concerns. We are prepared to take job action to achieve our objectives, " Forrest stated.

Talks between BUFA and the Employer are continuing. Chief Negotiator Joe Dolecki said that he hoped that the strong positive mandate would spur progress at the table.

The current Collective Agreement, which expired on March 31, was reached in 2005 following a positive BUFA strike vote and with the assistance of a Mediator, Arne Peltz.

BUFA represents approximately 240 full-time equivalent employees at Brandon University -- including Professors, Sessional Instructors, Librarians, Instructional Associates, Professional Associates, and Administrative Associates.
