BUFA STRIKE ACTION TO COMMENCE MONDAY

The Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) will commence strike action at Brandon University at 8:00 am on Monday, September 29, 2008.

The decision to execute the strike mandate was taken by the BUFA Executive Committee at a meeting held late this afternoon, following the failure of Conciliation efforts over a two-day period to produce a tentative agreement earlier in the day.

On Monday, BUFA announced an 84% positive strike vote.

In commenting on this development, BUFA Chief Negotiator Joe Dolecki said, "It is regrettable that BUFA has had to take job action in an attempt to achieve a fair and equitable agreement with the Employer."

"Unfortunately, the Employer -- who had requested Conciliation -- chose to squander this opportunity to resolve the issues between us," he said.

Meanwhile, John Korpesho, a former Chair of the Manitoba Labour Board, has agreed to mediate the dispute. Mediation is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 30, 2008.

Contract negotiations between the Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) and Brandon University's (BU) Board of Governors began on April 25. The current Collective Agreement was concluded with the assistance of a mediator in 2005.

BUFA represents approximately 240 full-time, part-time, and sessional employees at Brandon University - including Professors, Librarians, Instructional Associates, and Administrative Associates.
