BUFA Receives Support
As of November 4, 2008
In addition to the moral support provided by students, the community and
academics across Canada, BUFA has received support from numerous other
Canadian faculty associations as indicated by the letters below.
AUNB:
Tomorrow the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers will be dispatching … the first of our weekly cheques to Brandon in support of your efforts for a fair collective agreement. Your struggle is our struggle.
UMFA:
Yesterday, the UMFA Executive approved a donation of $2000 to our colleagues in the Brandon University Faculty Association in support of their strike action. The poor pension benefits and the inadequate salary are critical issues as is the refusal of the administration to acknowledge the vital importance of the principles of academic freedom and freedom of expression. We stand beside you in solidarity.
FUNSCAD:
FUNSCAD (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design Faculty Union) has approved a donation of $500 to be sent to our colleagues at Brandon University to assist in their struggle for a fair collective agreement. We wish you a speedy and satisfactory resolution to your strike.

YORK:
The York University Faculty Association has voted to send Brandon University Faculty Association a donation of $3,000 in support of their current strike, with a promise of $1,000 every two weeks for the duration of the strike. We also will be sending a second cheque to Windsor for $1,000 in support of their strike.
UNIVERSITY of WESTERN ONTARIO (UWO):
UWOFA supports our BUFA colleagues who are on strike and a check for $1000 is being sent today. We wish you success in this action and look forward to your receiving a fair settlement.

MOUNT SAINT VINCENT:
I am writing on behalf of the Mount Saint Vincent University Faculty Association to offer you our support in your strike that has just begun at Brandon University. It is always important that we stand together in support of each other, but it seems even more so these days when administrations are adopting a variety of tactics that seem designed to undermine collective bargaining itself. The MSVUFA is sending a cheque in the amount of $1000 to support BUFA in their strike action. Unfortunately no one from our association is able to join the flying pickets at either Windsor or Brandon this week, but we certainly are with you all in spirit.
ST. FRANCIS XAVIER:
The StFXAUT joins the BUFA bargaining unit in support for your efforts to re-establish and defend the most basic of rights for unionized faculty, rights which have seemingly been denied to You. Please accept our modest financial support for your strike action, and our best wishes for an immediate and favourable Resolution. Our cheque for $500 is in the mail.
U. WINNIPEG:
On behalf of the members of the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association, we want to assure you of the support that we have for your job action and the solidarity that we feel with you in your bargaining with the administration of Brandon University. We appreciate the courage that you have demonstrated in defending the ideals of the university & the practices of academic freedom & self-governance that are essential to the pursuit & dissemination of knowledge in a free society. The struggles of every faculty association across the country constitute a common cause as each advance or erosion in academic freedom builds precedents with which all must contend.... Your cause is the cause of us all. The UWFA Executive is sending a donation of $500 to our colleagues in Brandon and our steadfast support of their right to a fair and honourable settlement. This will be delivered tomorrow, along with flying picket David Josephy from Guelph, by Trustee Karen Zoppa. Hold the line!
ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY:
The Executive of the Faculty Association at Royal Roads University (RRUFA) voted today to offer our unconditional support and solidarity with the faculty associations on strike at Brandon and Windsor. While we are a small faculty complement and a new union, we will be sending $500 to each association to help with the expenses of the strike.
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO:
I am pleased to write that the UTFA executive today authorized sending $3,000 to the Brandon University Faculty Association strike fund. We wish you and your colleagues well.
UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA:
Enclosed please find a cheque in the amount of $2000 from your colleagues at the University of Manitoba Faculty Association in support of your struggle for a fair and reasonable collective agreement. We too are extremely concerned about the attempts of university administrations to continue to restrict the pension that our members are entitled to receive upon retirement. It is particularly reprehensible that the university administration has instituted a harassment policy which contravenes your Collective Agreement and further proposes that what has previously been negotiated in the form of your existing "Sexual Harassment Article" be deleted. We certainly support you in your efforts to protect your Members' academic freedom rights and to negotiate a satisfactory salary settlement. Congratulations on the commitment your Members have shown in this very difficult situation!
MEMORIAL:
At its Executive Committee meeting on Monday September 29, 2008 Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association (MUNFA) voted unanimously to send financial support for the members of BUFA in the sum of $1000 to help them carry through their job action against the Brandon University administration. Having gone through a two-week job action in November 2000, we can appreciate the difficulties your members may be facing and want to encourage you to hold firm in your resolve. It is worth repeating that the action you are not undertaking , you undertake on behalf of all academic staff members in Canada.
MONCTON (ABPPUM):
Enclosed is a cheque in the amount of $1000 from your friends and colleagues at ABPPUM in Moncton (Association des bibliothecaires, des professeures et professeurs de l'Universite te Moncton) We hope it will contribute to your determination to resolve outstanding issues. Please believe that we stand by you as we support you in your demands for the respect we all so rightfully deserve as professionals in our chosen careers.
QUEEN'S:
The Executive of the Queen's University Faculty Association has followed the breakdown in bargaining between yourselves and your administration with great concern. We hope that your strike will be brief and effective in bringing about a fair settlement. Attached please find a donation from QUFA of $1000 which we hope will assist BUFA in supporting your members during the strike.
The Executive of the Queen's Faculty Association continues to follow the situation between yourselves and your Administration with great concern. We hope that this situation improves as soon as possible with a rapid end to the strike. Attached please find an additional donation from the Queen's University Faculty Association of $1000 which we hope will assist BUFA in supporting your members during the strike.
CARLETON:
On behalf of the Carleton University Staff Association's 830 members, I am writing to convey our support for you and your Association in your strike. We know that no one takes the step to strike lightly, until all other possibilities have been exhausted. It is unfortunate that the present administrative tactics are to drive more and more faculty unions to the picket line when we should be in classrooms, labs, and libraries. Our Council has automatically approved a donation of $1500 to your strike fund at the end of the first and second weeks of strike. Certainly we hope that by then you will have won a fair and equitable settlement, but if not we are ready to donate more. The CAUT Defence Fund Flying Picket (of which we are a member) will be there on your picket line conveying support from sister Associations more visibly and vocally. This represents tangibly the fact that CUASA members are with you 100% in your struggle, whose outcome concerns us all.
APPBUSA:
The Association des professeurs et bibliothecaires de l'Universite Stainte-Anne would like to express their support to members of BUFA during this difficult and frustrating time. Attached please find a donation from APPBUSA of $1000, which we hope will assist you in supporting your faculty members during the strike.
ACADIA:
I write on behalf of the Acadia University Faculty Association to express our support for the Brandon University Faculty Association in its struggle to negotiate a fair contract. Having gone through two back-to-back strikes, we appreciate the difficulty of your position and encourage you to stand fast. It is the collective strength of your membership and their determination to protect not only their rights but also the integrity of the University that will win the day! Please find enclosed a cheque for $1500 to help offset the costs of your job action. Like you, we hope for a swift resolution, but in the meantime, consider this a first installment of our moral and financial support.
SAINT MARY'S:
The Saint Mary's University Faculty Union is pleased to donate $1000 to our colleagues at Brandon University Faculty Association to assist in their fight for a fair settlement. We are with you in spirit and wish you success in your struggle for an acceptable agreement.
CAPE BRETTON UNIVERSITY:
CBUFA is sending $1000.00 in support of the Brandon University Faculty Association. The time of year and the distance makes joining the picket line difficult for our members, but our hearts are with the faculty even if our feet are not.
CALGARY:
The Faculty Association of the University of Calgary is pleased to be among the many supporters of the legal strike efforts of the Brandon University Faculty Association. We are closely following developments in the University's violation of the Collective Agreement Article on Sexual Harassment and the threat posed by inappropriate application of the Respectful Environment Policy. Acknowledging the importance of fair salaries, we also join with you in rejecting any workplace not founded on the principles of academic freedom and collegial governance. The Faculty Association of the University of Calgary applauds your determination and advocacy, and recognizes that your defense of the academic environment is helping to secure the most basic protections of scholars across the country. We further appreciate that continued commitment is required to uphold the interests of BUFA members. Accordingly, we are enclosing our donation, in the amount of $3000 to be used at your discretion in support of the Members and activities of BUFA.
ACADIA:
The Acadia University Faculty Association supports our colleagues at Brandon and is sending a second donation of $1,500 to BUFA.
RYERSON:
Ryerson Faculty Association was pleased to send $1,000 to our colleagues at Brandon University Faculty Association in support of their struggle for a fair and equitable settlement. Our solidarity with your cause is foremost in our minds at this time, and we wish you the best possible outcome.
TRENT:
The Trent University Faculty Association sends our thoughts and strength to our fellow faculty at Brandon. The TUFA Executive approved a $1000 contribution to support BUFA.
MANITOBA TEACHERS' SOCIETY:
On behalf of the members of the Manitoba Teachers' Society we want to express our support for your job action with the administration of Brandon University. To that end we have moved our Western Regional Pre-retirement seminar out of the planned venue of Brandon University. I realize that striking is never easy and we appreciate the courage that BUFA has shown in its current action. Please pass along our expression of support to all of your members during this difficult situation.
LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY:
The Laurentian University Faculty Association is pleased to make a donation to the Brandon University Faculty Association in support of its strike and sends best wishes of solidarity. Please fine attached a cheque in the amount of $1000.
CARLETON UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION:
On behalf of the over 3500 graduate students at Carleton University, we would like to express our support for you during this labour action. We feel compelled to express our disappointment that the university administration is jeopardizing the futures of its own students at Brandon by denying its employees an equitable agreement. Of particular concern is the Respectful Environment Policy. Giving ultimate decision making power regarding complaints to the administration of Brandon University makes this a policy that can be used to threaten both academic freedom and student political activity. This is unacceptable. In order to protect the quality of their education, students deserve a swift and fair settlement for faculty. By standing together, faculty and students can together demand an agreement that is fair and reasonable. We at Carleton are proud to stand beside you, and we hope for a quick resolution.
WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY:
On behalf of the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association I am enclosing a cheque of $2000 in support of the striking faculty at Brandon University.
ST. THOMAS:
Please accept our support in the amount of $1000 for your ongoing struggles with a recalcitrant employer. You may know that FAUST recently endured a 5-week lockout/strike, and so we know all too well the difficulties you and your members are currently experiencing. I urge you all to continue to stand strong in the knowledge of the justice of your demands for, among other things, a positive working environment. Your solidarity will see you through.
LAKEHEAD:
Enclosed please find a cheque for $1000 for the Brandon University Faculty Association. The Lakehead University Faculty Association sends their support and hopes you will be able to reach a quick and equitable settlement.
OTTAWA (AUPO):
On behalf of the Association of Professor of the University of Ottawa, enclosed please find a cheque in the amount of $1,500 to support your faculty association's strike fund. Our best wishes to the members of the Brandon University Faculty Association in their endeavours.
DALHOUSIE:
On Thursday, 9 October 2008, the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) Executive passed a motion of support for our BUFA colleagues, in which we agreed that the DFA will make a conation in the amount of $1,000 to the BUFA Strike Fund. We are fully behind BUFA in your struggle for a just negotiated settlement, and are well aware that the issues for which you are on strike are important to and affect us all.
MONCTON (ABPPUMCE):
The ABPPUMCE expresses his support and solidarity during your strike by
offering a financial contribution of $500. We wish you to rapidly reach a
fair and just agreement.
REGINA:
Please find enclosed a cheque for $500 to help defray, in a small way, the costs that BUFA is incurring during your faculty strike. The issues you are fighting for in this strike are important and valuable. We wish you all the best.
